Behind the Seams: A day in the life of an ex-fashion student clinging onto her uni days.
Out of the four years I spent as a fashion student, my days came in all types: exciting, lazy, and good old average. But no matter the vibe, a few constants made those days feel distinctly “fashion school” — enough to be interesting (at least to me).
Now, for all my visual learners — yes, I vlogged most of these days on TikTok. You can watch my school years unfold in real time. But if you prefer a written breakdown and/or hate the sound of my voice… here’s how it all typically went down.
For the most part, I didn’t have class everyday. As course selection approached every year, I formed an unbreakable bond with Visual Schedule Builder, my virtual best friend who wanted me to have long weekends almost as much as I did. If you’re hardcore into ensuring your work-life is balanced, choose a few electives and put them in VSB to see if when combined with your mandatories, they give you a bit of time off.
After waking up and filming a GRWM that got 72 views inclusive of my mom and her friends, I headed to the GO Train. The GO dropped me at Union Station, where I continued my subway boycott by walking the PATH.
If you’re unfamiliar with the PATH, buckle up: it’s Toronto’s underground tunnel system — warm, safe, and filled with finance bros in Patagonia vests. I could walk from Union to the Eaton Centre without ever seeing daylight, just how I like it. It's clean, has great food, and security guards were as common as running into your hinge date named Josh.
I always arrived early to class. Not just because I’m Type A, but because walking in late to a close-knit fashion lecture is like showing up to prom in a Sherri Hill dress in 2014 — everyone notices.
Since the program was small, you naturally found your people — your “crew.” Whether it was pre-class catchups or hallway debriefs post-critique, we stuck together. Now that I’ve graduated and don’t see my friends as often, I seriously miss learning about what I love most with people who got it.
When I had time to kill between classes, I’d hide out in the student centre — a place I knew like the back of my hand. If it was midterms or finals, I’d hit the quiet study floor where the only thing you could hear was the sound of me chewing my sweet treat of the day. If it was syllabus week or or just a typical Wednesday, I headed to the cozy couches with the intention of binging (eating or Netflix for the most part).
Once the day wrapped, I’d groundhog my way back underground and head toward Union Station through the Eaton Centre. And even though I walked through one of the biggest malls in the country almost daily, I never once shopped to kill time. Not because I’m disciplined — I was broke af — but still, give credit where credit’s due.
Sure, it may not sound super glamorous, but in a program as hands-on and intimate as mine, no two days were ever the same. I truly learned something every single day.
So if you’re heading into fashion school, here’s my unsolicited advice:
Pick classes that spark something in you.
Surround yourself with people who get your hustle.
Work like you’ve got something to prove — because you do.
Do that, and you won’t just survive fashion school — you’ll thrive. And who knows, maybe you’ll end up being the rich man your mom wants you to marry. 💅
